Yurt Village

The Location

Just 20 minutes outside of Newcastle City Centre you’ll turn down our driveway and think you’re lost.  From the busy main roads and hustle of city life, take the left fork, you’ll pass the edge of the farm steading and drive towards the woods.  We’re a hidden gem and once you’re here you’ll soon forget how close you are to civilisation.  Keep following the signs for the Yurt Village and you’ll soon see the gateway to a beautiful woodland glade, nestled right into the edge of the tree line.

Our Yurt Village is surrounded by a beautiful mix of Oak, Ash and Beech trees, to name but a few, we have lots of wildlife here; squirrels and deer are often seen at dawn.  Each Yurt looks out over grazing fields and woodland with welcoming neighbours  – which may be the prize winning herd of Shorthorn cows; sheep flocks; or resident horses Pippa, Alan and Suki.

The Yurts are ideal for family time and we are very much child friendly.  There is a play castle & slide on site, along with a rope swing and den building area just 2 minutes through the gate into Gibside woodlands.  Cars are parked offsite which gives a safe environment for kids to play.  You can easily spend the full day in the woods as there’s always so much to do and see.  The site is off grid so escape from the ties of TV and laptops, just enough solar energy to charge your phones.  We recommend BBQ’s, picnics and laughter!

Each Yurt is positioned in such a way as to provide a sense of privacy but also situated close enough to each other to be suitable for group bookings.  The site map below shows the location of each yurt, please see our FAQ’s section for those wishing to make a group booking.

To access the Gibside attractions or walking routes, please follow the track through the woods at the bottom of the Yurt Village.  The Market Square and Visitor Information Centre are around a 20 minute walk along beautiful woodland trails.  How many squirrels or deer will you see?

We welcome arrivals from 4pm to 9pm on a self service check in basis and ask that guests have vacated the site by 10am latest on the day of check out.  The site has “quiet time” from 10pm.

The Yurts

Our Yurts are traditional Mongolian Gers, imported directly from Mongolia!

A thick felt insulation surrounds a wooden lattice frame, whilst a waterproof cover, secured by ropes, holds the structure together and makes the yurt watertight.  A transparent sky light in the ceiling of each yurt provides light and allows guests to enjoy the stars by night.  Yurt numbers 2 & 4 are extra large Yurts which sleep 6 on 2 double futons and 2 singles.  Yurts 1, 3, 5 & 6 are our standard size Yurts which sleep 4 guests on 1 double futon and 2 singles.

The interior of the yurts are traditionally hand painted and the flooring is covered in thick matting for your comfort. An indoor log burner is provided in each yurt, which makes for a cosy night’s sleep on the futons encircling the fire.  Yurts usually contain all the crockery/cutlery and cooking or dining gear that you could need, this may change depending on the COVID national restrictions.  Our yurt inventory is listed on the FAQs page but please also see our Covid-19 info page for up to date advice on what is included in each Yurt or what you may need to bring yourself, before you travel.

Externally, each yurt sits on its own private decking, complete with a 2 ring outdoor gas cooking stove, a picnic table and outdoor fire pit. A disposable barbeque can be supplied, if required, or you’re welcome to bring your own BBQ facilities.  Don’t forget to check out our shop page to preorder your fire kits, BBQs, etc.

The Yurt Village is totally off grid, this means that there is no electricity anywhere on site.  Don’t panic, we have provided a solar powered USB socket which will provide enough energy to charge up mobile phones, but it does mean that you can ditch the hairdryer / work laptop / TV and kickback to relax!

A clean toilet and shower block can be found at the centre of the site, along with a pot wash room, recycling area and a covered communal picnic area – perfect for larger groups to dine together!

Guest Reviews

Just returned from our 3rd trip in less than a year,, so that says it all,,, fantastic place,, kids love it,, so do the parents,,, this time we went with 2 other family’s and everyone had a great time,,, and the children are already planning our next trip back,,,,
The yurts have everything you need to cook/eat,,, just take your food and bedding, outdoor games, BBQ charcoal, some good friends and your all set for a great trip,,, little bit of sun helps as well,,,

We booked a small yurt for husband and I and two older children (13 and 9). We were welcomed by Alistair on arrival and helped with our luggage to the Yurt. There was plenty of room for sleeping and the futons were comfortable. Toliets and showers were cleaned regularly and fresh ice packs for the roomy ice box in the yurt were also provided.
Plenty of utensils provided and everything was clean.

We booked the yurt whilst our friends were camping in Gibside as part of the family camping weekend and it was a really lovely two night break.
